History of Mandav

 

Mandav, also known as Mandavgarh, is a historical town located in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Situated in the Malwa region, Mandav is perched atop hills and built as a strong fort. The history of Mandav begins in the 11th century with the rule of the Paramara dynasty and later came under Muslim rule in the 13th century.

 

Rulers of Mandu

 

Paramara Dynasty

In the 11th and 12th centuries, Mandu served as the capital of the Paramara rulers. During their reign, Mandu became an important center of culture and religion.

 

Rule of the Malwa Sultans

 The Sultans of Malwa annexed Mandu in In the 13th century. They built several magnificent structures here, such as the Jama Masjid, the tomb of Hoshang Shah, and the Jahaz Mahal.

 

Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati

Mandav is also famous for the romantic tale of Rani Roopmati and King Baz Bahadur. The roopmate Palace was built in the memory of his beloved queen by  King Baz Bahadur

Mughal Rule

In the 16th century, Mandav came under the control of the Mughals. Although they constructed several buildings, the true artistic heritage of Mandu is best represented by the structures built by the Malwa rulers in the 14th and 15th centuries.

A two-story palace that appears to float between two lakes, resembling a ship.

Hindola Mahal

An unusual palace known for its unique design and decorative features. The name means “Swinging Palace” due to its sloping walls.

This palace was built by King Baz Bahadur in memory of Queen Roopmati.

Located in the Malwa area of Madhya Pradesh, close to Maheshwar, Mandu is now a well-liked tourist resort.
