Ajanta Ellora Caves – A Wonderful Confluence of Ancient Art and Culture of India

Introduction

Located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, Ajanta &  Ellora Caves are a priceless treasure of India’s cultural heritage. These caves are not only a great example of Indian art and architecture, but also a symbol of the spiritual unity of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Buddhist Art’s Golden Age: The Ajanta Caves

When a British officer came to hunt in 1819, he unintentionally found the Ajanta Caves.. These caves were built between the 2nd century BC and the 6th century AD. There are a total of 30 caves here, including chaityagrihas (prayer places) and viharas (monasteries)

The events of Lord Buddha’s life are depicted in the form of wonderful murals on the walls of the caves.

Natural colors have been used in the paintings, which still retain their shine.

The Jataka stories of Buddhism are engraved in beautiful and vibrant paintings.

Ajanta paintings are called the “Golden Period” of Indian art. The art here is so fine and emotional that it takes the viewer beyond the boundaries of time.

Ajanta Ellora Caves – Confluence of Religions

The Ajanta Ellora Caves, which were constructed between the sixth and tenth centuries, are roughly thirty kilometers from Aurangabad. This area contains 34 caverns in total:

12 Buddhist caves

Ajanta Ellora Caves

17 Hindu caves

5 Jain caves

Main attraction – Kailash Temple (Cave number 16)

 

This temple, built by cutting a single stone, is an excellent example of Indian sculpture.It depicts Lord Shiva’s Kailash mountain.The pillars, sculptures and carvings of the temple are amazing.

From Buddhist monasteries to grand Hindu temples and peaceful sites of Jainism, every place in the Ellora caves has a different spiritual and artistic experience.

Distance from Ellora: About 30 km

By road: Good bus and taxi services are available from Maharashtra and neighboring states.

Best time to visit

October to March is considered the best season to visit here. During this time the weather is pleasant and it is comfortable to roam inside the caves. Coming here even during the rainy season gives a different experience, as the view of greenery and waterfalls all around is captivating.

Travel tips

1. Be sure to take a local guide to understand the history and importance of the caves.
2. Carry enough water and light snacks, especially in summers.
3. Wear comfortable shoes as there may be a lot of walking.
4. Keep the camera battery and memory card fully charged – the pictures here are very special.
