Kedarkantha,One can witness some amazing snowcapped mountains in the Garhwal District. Uttarakhand is home to hidden places where no roads go, but you can only walk up to explore the beauty within.
The most scenic peak one can explore as a peak is Kedarkantha. You won’t believe my words, but once you walk up, you will realise what a frozen land it can be. But yes, I’m talking about the winter season for sure. From beginners to professional trekkers can easily climb up, but yes, you should be used to living and sustaining in that snow. You need to reach Sankri village.
You will have to climb up to an altitude of 12,500 feet. It offers a brilliant panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges.
Snow drooling over across the entire meadow, tempting you to jump into play and immerse yourself in a play. Just like a fairytale, you will come across Juda ka Talab. A freshwater lake. Its beauty lies in it when it freezes cold. Surrounded by alpine trees and meadows with snow terrains. What a beauty in itself! Just imagine the site. Blooming flowers, lush aplphine, the scent of the forest and the beauty one can’t miss.
Kedarkantha is related to the mythological story of Lord Shiva and the Pandavas.
It is believed that Lord Shiva was meditating on the peak and was disturbed by the Pandavas. He tried to hide from them and transformed into a bull. As the Pandavas pursued him, parts of his divine body were scattered, and his throat landed on the mountain. Hence, the name “Kedarkantha” ( Throat of Kedar). Until the 2000s, it grew popular due to its scenery and its being suitable for beginners.
Walking into the Frozenland of Kedarkantha
Well, it’s an easy and moderate trek and apt for beginners. The best time to visit is from December to April if you wish to experience snow and winter. It shall definitely take you to a frozen land. If you like the greens and pleasant weather, then you should drop by from May to June and from September to November.Don’t take the risk during the monsoons, as it may get a little scary. So don’t avoid July to September. On the trek up to Kedarkantha, you will need some high-energy vegetarian meals.
At the base village, you can explore and taste some local food with the Sankri villagers. Enjoy some hot tea and Maggie on the desi chula. You will also see a 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges.
You can see the Swargarohini, Black Peak and Bandarpunch. There are several options for homestays, which will help you experience the local life in the hills. You can also experience the spectacular sunrise over the snow-capped mountains.
You will also get to witness the “Valley of Gods”, Har Ki Dun, a special place in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is known for its beauty and glacier views.
Oh yes! How can you not miss the nearby high-altitude meadow “Dayara Bugyal. It’s a huge, beautiful pasture of alpine and a popular place in the Himalayas.
The base camp is located at 3,400 meters, and it has a spectacular view of the Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch. It’s the final spot before the climb.
Bandarpunch is a mountain massif in the Garhwal Himalayas. It’s inspired by the Mythological story where Hanumanji’s tail was set on fire, and he rested on the mountains to beat out the flames.
The Phulara Ridge is also an offbeat place with a continuous ridge walk. Also Rubin Pass and the Bali Pass are the challenging ones in the same area. If you wish to do of Goddess Yamuna darshan, then visit the nearby Yamnoutri temple and the Gangotri Glacier.
You can visit the nearest towns of Dehradun and Mussoorie, visit the local sightseeing spots, shop, eat and drool. You can reach Sankri village, the nearest town is Dehradun either by train, bus,air or car.
