Mig La Pass- Ladakh. The Highest Motorable Road In India

Mig La Pass

Mig La Pass? What’s that? Where’s That? Is there a last road that you can drive upto? That too is a new one and higher than the Khardungla Pass. It’s about 19,400 ft. Now that’s what we call lets ride up there. By the way its in Ladakh at the Changthang Plateau. Valleys, beautiful, clear skies. Known as the Little Tibet, it gives you a dive into the Buddhist culture.

It leaves you with another level of peace due to its aura and space. The stark beauty with rugged and crystal clear lakes makes your drive up to Mig La Pass all the more beautiful. It’s a great piece of engineering and a marvel, so well designed to sustain that height. It also becomes all weather road on a global scale.

Its is further than Khardungla Pass and has lots of Military presence. Its hold a world record for being the Highest Motorable road. It’s constructed with a lot of effort and hardwork by the BRO. It’s also built to enhance India’s strategic border connection. ( for areas close to LAC). It has become accessible every year.

It’s strategically connected for The Indian Army to boost their logistics, and also for tourists and adventure lovers, it gives a lot of potential to get your aderalines a rush. It connects Likaru and Fukche. It’s built under Project Himank- specially curated to build roads on higher altitudes. Since these areas are quite sensitive, they need closer surveillance. This sounds like a plan for sure, as we have a new destination for a high-altitude adventure and motorcycle ride. So let’s go to this Land of Passes and experience the mesmerising road and beauty.

Mig La Pass

The rush of the wind, the sunshine on your skin an indescribable and addictive rush. Sitting on your metal bird holding a symphony of liberation to the road less travelled. Well thats a true experience of a motorcycle expedition at that altitude.

You will be thrilled with Himlayan beauty, the panoramic views, and the ultimate exploration. But yes, all this is possible only with a permit in hand. The wonders of Ladakh, the deep spiritual experience and interaction with the locals and the Indian Army is definitley an experience. Conquering Mig La Pass is not only on the bucket list but a dream to drive up there.

You can also experience some paragliding and cycling expeditions, but with strict safety rules and standards to be followed. Walk into the Changthan region as Mig La Pass acts as a gateway to it. It’s a beautiful, cold desert plateau with Pangong Tso, the salt lake stunner. If youre lucky, you shall see some unique Tibetan Antelope. Interact with The Changpa tribe, know their way of life and culture. Try some local meals, snacks, and explore their traditions. You will also see them herd yaks and goats. They survive on livestock and are resilient to the harsh environment.

While you drive, you will also get to see some snow leopards, kiangs and black-necked cranes. Oh! This place is quite vital for migratory birdies like the Bar- headed Goose.

Hanle is yet another place photographers can’t miss. The vistas, views and beauty will mesmerise you. It’s a high-altitude village. For a spiritual expereince you should visit the ancient monastery Hanle Gompa. It’s famous for its breathtaking landscapes. To watch millions of stars and explore some of the sky and planets, you must do some astrophotography and stargazing. The Indian Astronomical Observatory is one of the world’s highest. Well, the skies in Hanle are very dark, and hence the visibility of stars is more than expected from your regular metropolitan city skies. Also known as Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (HDSR). Its an absolute scientific wonder.

You also need to be quite fit to reach up, and beware of Altitude sickness. You deifnitely to get a medical done before your trip, stay hydrated, eat well, get your thermals, UV sunglasses, gloves, sturdy boots and a GPS are crucial.

While you’re there, respect Military and prohibited zones. Be mindful of what you post, click and share, keeping the country’s safety in mind. Keep Mig La Pass and the beauty spaces clean. The Best time to visit here and the most accessible months are June to September.

Mind it, is not a casual tourist spot its for seasoned travellers who seek extreme adventures and challenging terrains, but all need to be well organised by authorised expedition planners.

The weather up there is quite harsh. 50% less oxygen, chilling cold thats like sub zero, strong winds and a lot of snowfalls. Boss, you really need to be pre-planned and prepared for this one.

You need to reach Leh, Ladakh first, then get acclimatised. Then take the Likaru-Mig La-Fukche route thats in eastern Ladakh near the Indo-China border. It connects Hanle to Fukche, but it’s quite a challenge since it’s at a higher altitude. It does require permissions and pre plan, as it’s a sensitive zone and in extreme conditions too.
