Narkanda- Shimla’s Ultimate Skiing destination in the Himalayan ranges

It’s always a fantasy to play and jump into the snow, and throw some snowballs. What if I tell you about a snow-capped space close to Shimla? The Majestic Himalayas have the striking and serene snow peaks and slopes, sparkling with white cloaks. Awe-inspiring and an image one can think of as a paintingNarkanda in Shimla is a favourite pick for adrenaline ski lovers. Nature and sports are such a lovely combination.

So, where exactly is Narkanda? 

A state with its own distinct history, in 1971, it was located right in the scenic Himalayan ranges. Basically, it lies just close to Shimla and is a place that was developed by the State tourism ministry. Narkanda’s history is not documented as such, but is linked with the mythological roots. 

The Pandavas are believed to have resided during their exile at the Hatu Mata temple and its nearby areas. They also claimed to cook their meals here. The evidence of stone hearths known as Bheem Chulla is near the temple. The Hatu Mata temple is a place of importance. 

The mythological stories attract many tourists to Narkanda. The deep connection to the Mahabharata has its identity in the Pandavas’ exile. It’s an important part of the place’s identity. Since 1980, Narkanda has been considered a paradise for skiing. Earlier, it was merely a populated mountainous and hilly area.

During the modern development days, Shimla was getting revamped under the British rule, and Narkanda was simply a large natural surrounding landscape. It has become more accessible with bigger roads and better accessibility to it. The Himachal tourist department has been conducting skiing courses annually.

Best places to visit in Narkanda

Being in the Himachal ranges, Narkanda has the beauty one looks for. The Hatu peak is a must-visit in the region as it’s the highest point. Lakes are always mesmerising, and too on the mountains are extremely serene. A must-visit is Tani Jubbar Lake, which is an oval-shaped lake. It’s surrounded by deodar trees and blue pine. You will be awestruck by the deodars around them. Ideal for photographers and for a stroll or walk in nature.

Apple picking and tasting fresh ones can be done at the Stokes Farm. It’s known for its apple orchards, wine, and jam production. A family outing will be awesome to learn more and explore these orchards. 

Jau Baag is one of the religious and cultural sites with a scenic location for a visit.

Hatu Mata temple is an eminent temple at the top of Hatu peak.

 

The  Mahamaya temple and Derthu Mata temple are unflappable and serene that providing a panoramic view of the nearby beautiful mountains. Banjara Orchard retreat is a popular tourist spot in the area. Bhim Kali Temple is another ancient wonder in a nearby town in Sarahan.

 

The town receives amazing snowfall in winter, making it a snowland and a prime spot for many snow activities. Pick some local hand-woven shawls and kullu caps. You can also pick some jams, pickles, and syrups.

How to reach Narkanda, India !

A historic railway line in Haryana, famous for its Kalka-Shimla Railway. You can hop into the famous toy train from Kalka. It’s the most beautiful route one can experience with the glorious Himalayan ranges. It’s a great work of engineering of a narrow gauge. The most difficult task was to build this with 103 tunnels, 5miles, and over 800 bridges in just 3 years. It takes about 5-6 hours from Kalka to Shimla. Chandigarh is also a nearby place to get a train.

From Shimla you will have to hop onto a Himalayan taxi, which is dam spacious and comfortable. Narkanda is just 65 km away from Shimla. Well, if you wish to travel locally, pick a bus and interact with locals in the bus, and explore their lives with sweet conversations. Well, monsoons are a complete no-no as Shimla sees a lot of heavy rainfall, and there have been several incidents of landslides.If you don’t like a lot of cold, then visit during the pleasant period between April and June. This will be a good time for you to stroll around and do all the activities. Winters in Narkanda become a snow wonderland, as mentioned earlier, go skiing. 

So what are you guys waiting for? Pack your bags for a hop onto the Kalka toy train and ski all the way in the snow!
