Gaya Pitru Paksha Mela – Bihar

Gaya Pitru Paksha Mela

Gaya Pind Daan Mela! Bihar.  With all the many places in India, some places carry great importance in Mythology and rituals. Some places are considered holy and have some connection with heavenly deities.

It’s not just about a place but a particular religion that is associated with it. Many states in India, they carry a vibe, aura, and special place. I’m sure you remember heading to your school libraries and opening some comics which told us stories of different deities and God.

It did talk about some of the other kingdoms, dynasties, gods’ abodes, and places on earth where mythological history and gods’ blessings exist even today.

In spiritual scriptures and books, you will get to read about them and why it is necessary to visit or do a particular ritual there.

Gaya Pind Daan- Pitra Paksha

First, let’s understand why a place is important and for what. So, the 16th Lunar period in the Hindu calendar is when the Hindu community pays homage to their ancestors, and they offer prayers to their departed ancestors. The fortnight of the ancestors falls in a period called Krishna Paksha of the Bharpada or Ashwin. This means the months of September and October.

The rituals people also do at home include Shraadh, Tarpan, and Pind daan to nourish the souls of the next three generations. Feeding crows, cows, and the needy. It is a time when they express gratitude and thanks and also repay our debts to the past generations who taught us values and gave life.  Hindus believe that the ancestors visit the earth during this time, and these rituals help them find peace, satisfaction, and spiritual liberation.

Why do people do this? Its because performing these rites with a pure heart is believed to remove negative karmic imbalances and ancestral curses. It brings health, harmony and prosperity to the family.

It’s one of the most famous pilgrimage places for Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus. It’s known worldwide for its ancestral rites and liberation rituals. In the Vayu Purana and Garuda Purana, the city is named after a powerful demon named Gayasura. Lord Vishnu subdued him with his club, and Gayasura’s body transformed into the rocky hills surrounding the region. Gayasura’s sacrifice is the holiest place on earth to wash away sins and offer prayers to ancestors.

In Hinduism, they believe the Pind Daan ritual helps the departed soul attain Moksha, i.e., liberation from the cycle of Rebirth. It is also believed that Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana visited Gaya to offer Pind Daan for King Dasharatha. Millions of people travel to Gaya in Bihar to perform these rites. Sanjay Dutt and Puneet Issar are among some film personalities who visited Gaya to perform ancestral and Pind Daan Rituals.

Gaya is in the south-central part of Bihar in India. It is about 100 kms from Patna. Its falls along the Phalgu River. It was named after Gayasura. The Vishnupad Temple is the place you need to go to do the Pitra Paksha rituals.

While you’re in Gaya, you can visit Bodh Gaya too, the famous Buddhist abode where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It has several rocky hills on its three sides Mangla, Gauri, Ramshila, and Brahmayoni with the Phalgu River to the east. It is usually humid and hot in summers, while super cool and cold in winters to pack accordingly.

You can easily come here by Gaya Junction railway station and the international airport. It’s a highly revered spiritual and religious place and very accessible.

Well, if you’re not able to travel all the way to Gaya, Bihar, you can do some Pindaan at home in a simple way of doing tarpan, animal seva, and food seva.
