Well, are we talking about a king that has been there for years? Well, yes, this one is not a human or king from our history who still stays, but we are talking about the very own Lalbaug cha raja. Our own Mahaganpatiji, who is considered the King of Lalbaug and also of Mumbai.

The 10-day Ganeshotsav is celebrated in August September each year. People across the world believe in Lord Ganesha and celebrate these 10 days by bringing them home.

We have our little Ganpatis in our homes, and a small family get-together and puja is all makes it more special. The rituals and traditions are celebrated during this time.

It’s also a decades-old tradition. Youth and the people of a particular society and area make mandals and groups collect an amount and make all arrangements for the festival and bring Bappa in their area. There are many such groups which are years old and have maintained these traditions. Today, they are able to manage a crowd of lakhs to visit their mandal for darshan.

Idols come in eco-friendly sizes, from the tiniest in the city to the largest. The humongous ones make your eyes teary to see the massive positive vibe. The idols are made months before the fest and decorated according to the need.

The idols are decorated with Jewellery and clothes each day. Fresh flowers, lights, and his Puja are done in the most ritualistic form.

People have gathered and contributed crores of rupees too, making them India’s and the world’s richest idols with insurance.

Lalbaug cha Raja -History

Can you believe this King was founded in the year 1934, that too by a local fisherman community and a group of traders. They had prayed for a permanent marketplace after the Peru Chawl market was shut. They made sure a permanent location was set for this King each year, and hence Lalbaug was the place chosen.

It is widely known as Navsacha Ganpati. People who come here have their wishes fulfilled, and this has made millions of people from across the world come. Every hour and every 11 days, you will see a massive crowd. Pre-bookings, slots, and timings mean people stand in lines to come to take darshan of him. One of the families at that time, known as the Kambli, in 1935 designed the features of the unique, human-life seated posture idol. The mandal also had a great impact during the Indian freedom struggle. It was also used for social and national awareness.

This year, the theme of the mandal is Mahadev- Lord Shiva- and the grand décor includes temple-style design and architecture, and a massive trishul and shivling as a central focus of the festival. The temple design is taken from the Ujjain Mahakal style, and so much of the beautiful intricacy in the brickwork and gold-plated accents make it worth a visit.

It’s not only the inside, but you will also see, as you reach Lalbaug, the huge statue of Shiv with Damaru and Kamandalu. When art is for real, then the lights and the setup make it all more visually appealing with their effects. When you look into the eyes of Lord Shiva, you will see the mesmerizing eyes blinking calmly and peacefully.

The mandal is called the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, and this year it celebrates the 93rd year in 2026.

You can visit and take his final darshan; today marks the 10th day, and his visarjan will commence soon. So head to the same place, Lalbaug, and he will be all around the route in Mumbai, heading off to Chowpatty for a final darshan and goodbye. The grand closing and his final goodbye will be at his visarjan on 25th September 2026.
