Adi Kailash – A yatra to the sacred adobe of Lord Shiva.

Adi Kailash

Adi Kailash! dont get confused with the name. Well, Adi Kailash and Mount Kailash are not the same. The beautiful state of Uttarakhand is a state where the district of Pithoragarh has Adi Kailash, and Mount Kailash is in the Tibetan Autonomous region of China.

Adi Kailash is known as Chota or Baba Kailash. It is a replica of Mount Kailash. This holy peak is sacred to the Hindu community. Adi Kailash is at 19,505 ft. It is a home to Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. Their children, Ganpati and Karthikey too reside here.

Mount Kailash is higher than Adi Kailash with a height of 21,778 ft. It is an abode to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They sit here in meditation. In Buddhist scriptures, it is a dwelling of Buddha Demchok and a site of enlightenment for Rishabhanatha in Jainism, and a home to the sky goddess Sipaimen.

The Kumoan Himalayan range stands magnificently with its beauty and serenity. You will feel the calmness and peace. Adi Kailash is believed to be an early manifestation of Mount Kailash.

It is one of the five sacred “Panch Kailash” peaks. These include Mount Kailash, Adi Kailash, Kinnaur Kailash, Manimahesh Kailash, and Shrikhand Mahadev.

It also involves a trip to Om Parvat, which has a natural snow-formed “Om Symbol.” It is located near Nepal. It is considered the abode of Lord Shiva. Its a significant stop on the routes of Kailash- Mansarovar and Adi Kailash routes. It offers a view from Nabidhang.

A high-altitude lake at a height of 15,200ft. Known as Jolingkong lake known as Gauri kund. It is located in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand. It also features a small Shiva-Parvati shrine that reflects the mountain summit.

Adi Kailash

Has anybody summited Adi Kailash ?

Yes, a few international team members led by Andy Perkins and Martin Welch made their first ascent, but left the journey in between due to snow and loose rocks. In the year 2004, Tim Woodward, Jack Pearce, and Andy Perkins. A British-Scottish and American team submitted Adi Kailash successfully. But since then, climbing of Adi Kailash is no longer allowed.

The trek to Adi Kailash for darshan is moderate and easy for both seasonal trekkers and beginners who are seeking a spiritual adventure. It’s manageable in terms of difficulty, and it can be a great choice for families that wish to embark on spirituality.

Only children above the age of 9 are allowed, and senior citizens up to the age of 70 yrs. Anybody below the age bar is prohibited. It is advisable not to go to that high-altitude. You can do this yatra in May and October. It does require trekking and good physical fitness.

You will need Inner Line Permits to visit the area, as it’s quite close to the Indo-Tibetan border. In 1981, pilgrimages from India were allowed under an agreement between India and China. It was suspended during Covid-19 pandemic and was reopened in 2023 with new rules.

Preparations need a pre-plan and fitness to survive

You will first have to check with your medical doctor and get a few tests done to check on your health before you plan to take this trip. If yes, then you will have to do regular cardio and walking exercises to build your stamina. You will have to carry heavy woolen clothing, thermal water, windproof jackets, and waterproof trekking shoes.

You will have to first learn how to acclimatize and keep yourself hydrated. Even get the AMS medicines advised by your doctor.
