These canals are a great source and have transformed the harsh, arid desert land of Sri Ganganagar into an agricultural space.

The city also grows Kinnow the the hybrid citrus fruit, and Malta.
With a high level of irrigation and agriculture, it supplies a lot of rashan, veggies, and fruits to Rajasthan and other states too.

Historic heritage of Sri Ganganagar.

Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner is the one who changed the entire barren land into an agricultural paradise. With a lot of thought and work, he conceived the Gang Canal in the year 1927, with the Sutlej River that waters the desert.

In the early years, during the Vedic times and ancient civilizations, the Indus Valley civilization flourished here. The region was watered by the Saraswati and Drishadvati rivers.

Sri Ganganagar in the 15th century was absorbed into the Princely state of Bikaner by Rao Bika.
The change and revolution took place in the year 1899 and was completed in 1927.

The Sutlej Valley Project was inaugurated. Earlier, it was known as Ramnagar, a well-planned modern city. Later, the name of the City was changed in honor of the king and Maharaja, naming it Sri Ganganagar.
This made this place fertile and agriculture-friendly. People from other states specially punjab showed keen interest in the fertile land. Hence, post-independence and partition, Sri Ganganagar was known as the Food Basket of Rajasthan.
